But did you know that your grades and credit hours can affect your aid?

We spoke with Melissa Heinrich, senior director of ASU’s Financial Aid and Scholarship Services, to find the answers you need to stay on top of your academic and financial status.

You must meet the Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) requirements. Failure to meet even one of these categories can risk losing your aid.

Contact Financial Aid Office

The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarship Services will notify you if you do not meet the SAP requirements. Once the financial aid office notifies you, you will have the opportunity to appeal.

You must fill out a SAP appeal form and submit it to the financial aid office. Next, meet with your academic advisor to establish an academic plan to get you back on track and meet SAP requirements. You must also submit a statement to show how you are overcoming the problems that have made you unsuccessful in the past and that you are taking positive steps to make changes.

If your appeal is approved by Financial Aid and Scholarship Services, you will be on probation and eligible for financial aid. If you improve enough during the trial period to meet SAP requirements, you will remain eligible for financial aid. Failure to meet the SAP requirements may result in loss of eligibility.

Your best bet for keeping your aid is to stay above the eligibility requirements so you never have to go through this process. You can view your SAP balance under the Finance tab of My ASU.

While gift aid like grants and scholarships are always ideal because you don’t have to pay them back—most students simply can’t afford to go to school without taking out loans.

A student loan is a nominal amount of money that you borrow to help pay for your college tuition. Loans give you money to pay for college now—but in exchange for that money, you have to pay those funds back with interest.

Each loan has its own interest rate and repayment terms depending on the type of loan and your eligibility criteria.

Empowered To Make A Difference

If you are applying for federal student loans, you will need to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is the comprehensive application form used by the US Department of Education to determine your eligibility for federal loans and grants.

Arizona State also accepts personal loans (which are generally credit-based) from other lenders. If you go for a personal loan, just remember that the application process is far from perfect. Each lender will inevitably have their own application process, so just make sure you understand how to apply and all the eligibility requirements.

The federal government uses the FAFSA to calculate how much US government aid you qualify for. But your state and ASU will also look at the information you entered on the FAFSA to determine whether you may qualify for financial aid or institutional aid.

That said, it’s important to remember that many of ASU’s scholarships require you to fill out separate application forms. This is especially true for current ASU students applying for scholarships.
