Central Michigan University Transfer Scholarships – The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) for the 2024-25 school year will be open until December 31 of this year. Financial aid counselors are available to help you with your financial aid questions in a number of ways. Appointments can be made Monday through Friday, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. By phone, in person (Warriner 202), or virtually (MS Teams).

The FAFSA is available to complete online. Due to the FAFSA Simplification Act, the 2024-2025 FAFSA will open in December 2023, future FAFSAs will open on October 1. You can read more about the FAFSA simplification rule here.

CMU must receive your FAFSA application at least two weeks before the end of the semester in which you are enrolled.

Awarded to an outstanding master’s degree student who earned a grade point average of 3.00 or higher. The award is the result of a scholarship competition held during the fall semester.

This award was established by President George Ross and CMU First Lady Elizabeth Ross and is for an incoming student from metropolitan Detroit, Flint or Saginaw who shows exceptional promise as a vocal music professional. The recipient will be determined by the Director of the School of Music in consultation with the Dean of the College of Arts and Communication and the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid.

The scholarships are awarded annually to a junior, senior or returning senior who demonstrates artistic ability in a competition held during the spring semester.

Scholarship applications are open to all undergraduate trombonists who are currently music majors and have completed at least 45 credit hours but no more than 100 credit hours prior to the semester of application. Applications will be accepted and reviewed each spring semester, and the award will be given at the beginning of the fall semester. The students will be selected by a committee according to the following criteria:

This scholarship is awarded to an incoming freshman or transfer student who is a full-time music major with a trombone emphasis, maintains a 3.25 GPA for all music classes, and attends the CMU Music Conferences.

This scholarship program will be awarded annually to a returning junior or senior artist who demonstrates artistic ability in the bronze competition held during the spring semester. The requirements for the competition include running a sequence of 6-10 minutes in length and an average score of 3.2 or higher.

Recipients will be an undergraduate or graduate student with a 3.0 GPA, with preference given to an incoming freshman with a 3.0 GPA and/or an incoming graduate student with a 3.0 undergraduate GPA. Preference will be given to recipients with a master’s or master’s degree in organ method, as well as a successful test at the music school. If there are no eligible personal system majors, students majoring or minoring in keyboards may be considered. The recipient will be selected by a committee consisting of keyboard instructors. If no student meets the requirements in a particular year, the donors request that the award not be given that year and that the amount allocated to the award be returned to the endowment fund.

Funds from this fund will be awarded annually to a student deemed worthy and in need of an advanced piano scholarship through a piano competition during the spring semester.

Office Of Scholarships And Financial Aid

Awarded to a resident of Genesee County, Michigan, who is a musician and his primary percussion instrument. If there are no eligible applicants, priority will be given to residents of Genesee County as follows, in this order: 1) Jazz lessons, non-keyboard, 2) Jazz lessons, keyboard (piano), 3) Any instrument. If there are no musicians from Genesee County, then preference will be given to a Michigan resident majoring in music with any instrument. Sophomores or upperclassmen must be full-time students and earn a minimum 3.0 GPA. An incoming freshman may apply for the scholarship but must have a 3.00 high school average and demonstrate a high level of musical proficiency and excellence. This award will be determined by the Percussion Professor (or appropriate professor) and will recommend them to the Dean of the School of Music.

The award will be given to a qualified and active music major whose primary instrument is percussion, who has a record of academic progress as evidenced by a GPA of 3.5 or higher and who demonstrates financial need. In the event that there is no qualified candidate for the scholarship who is a musician, the scholarship may be awarded to another music student who meets the requirements of this scholarship. The number, amount and recipient of the scholarship will be determined by the director of the music school, in consultation with the scholarship and financial aid office.

Recipients must be promising students with financial need, particularly in instrumental music. Recipients must have an average of 3.25, and be in junior or senior status. Preference will be given to students from Michigan. The choice will be given to the student. The recipient(s) of the award will be determined by the appropriate department in consultation with the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid.

A one-time scholarship awarded to all applicants entering high school and violin graduates who present exceptional entrance exams. Current violin students with a GPA of 2.75 enrolled in violin and orchestra studies are eligible for consideration for this award upon written application, statement of financial need.

The recipients of the award will be determined by the school’s music department, in consultation with the scholarship and financial aid office.

This scholarship effort was started in 2022 by colleagues, family and friends of José Luis Maurtoa. Dr. Maurtois served as Director of Orchestral Studies and Professor of Orchestration at Central Michigan University from 1999 until his untimely death in 2022. The non-renewable scholarship will be available to incoming or continuing students, full-time or part-time, who will perform in the strings section of the CMU Orchestra. No receivers are interested major or minor in music. The donor intends to have the greatest financial impact on individual students by covering the scholarship amount up to the full cost of attendance. Once a student receives full tuition, additional funds can be awarded to additional students.

Awarded to the sophomore, junior, senior or graduate student who is considered the most talented jazz musician. The recipient will be selected by the School of Music and presented with this award at the last jazz concert of the school year.
