Earlier this year, Termeh Khoshniat was awarded a Cancer Alliance Fellowship based on an essay she wrote about being a caregiver for her mother, who was diagnosed with stage 2 cancer when Termeh was just 16 years old.
While being a caregiver always has its challenges, no matter your age or stage of life, there are some unique challenges to being a caregiver while in school full-time . We caught up with Termeh to see how she juggles both the day-to-day challenges of caring for her mother and the rigorous study schedule required by her curriculum.
When Termeh transferred from a local college, where she lived near her mother, to a large university farther away, she faced difficulties for which she was unprepared. “I quickly became exhausted,” Termeh admits, “and I could no longer handle the pressure of dealing with school and my mother. I don’t even have time to relax and always feel like there’s a huge burden on my shoulders.”

What helps her cope, she says, is finding a way to prioritize the most important things in life. “I need a schedule for my mom and me,” Termeh explains. “Always going to school and mom comes first, and I will reward myself when I finish work, like a day of relaxation. After a while, it became a system and I have adopted this system to this day, even though some days I still feel overwhelmed.”
Sometimes it can be difficult to focus on yourself when you spend so much time with other people. However, finding time to pursue your own dreams, goals and aspirations is extremely important, for both caregivers and those they care for.
When asked what the most important advice she could give other child care workers, Termeh replied: “Any child care worker with a dream should not give up on their dreams and goals. school or anything else.”
In particular, Termeh expressed the importance of understanding and embracing the unique and challenging aspects of being a child caregiver. “Feel lucky that you have the opportunity to experience something so difficult and challenging in your young adulthood, when many people do not have the opportunity to be challenged to this degree for until adulthood”.

Caregivers can sometimes feel overwhelmed by the stress of caregiving, which can lead to health problems and psychological distress. Termeh said she tries to be mindful of her own need to stay healthy, for her and her mother’s sake.
“I don’t have much time, but with my busy schedule, I try to hit the gym, dance or box,” Termeh admits. These activities help me reduce anxiety or reduce stress.”
Additionally, Termeh recommends avoiding habits that may not be good for you. “Try to avoid things that damage your mind and soul like fatty foods, soft drinks, smoking and alcohol,” she advises. “The best thing you can do for yourself is to surround yourself with positive things like exercise, healthy foods like vegetables and fruits, yoga. Most importantly, remember to take care of your own needs.” Dear friends, make sure you give yourself some well-deserved rest.”
In her scholarship essay, Termeh admitted she had always dreamed of becoming a doctor. However, due to her mother’s illness and financial problems caused by medical expenses, Termeh was diagnosed with depression and anxiety.

Luckily, Termeh discovered a way to use her role as a caregiver to spark her determination to enter the medical field. “I always wanted to become a doctor since I was very young, but after my mother fell ill, my passion to become a doctor became even stronger,” Termeh said.
Using her mother’s situation as a way to fuel her own ambitions was an important part of helping Termeh find balance in her role as caregiver. “I had days when I doubted myself whether I wanted to continue this difficult and strenuous journey,” Termeh admitted, “but every time my mother blessed me and thanked me, I felt that Being a doctor is not just about grades and achievements, it is also about a passion for helping and understanding patients.”
There’s no doubt that becoming a caregiver forces you to learn things you never had to learn before. “It’s one of the hardest jobs when you’re young,” Termeh said. “It’s difficult because you face emotional, mental and physical challenges.”
But these emotional, mental, and physical challenges can also lead to opportunities for growth. For Termeh, the hardships she endured as a caregiver also helped her develop compassion and patience.
