Some of these scholarships are unique to certain majors or university departments. Others are based on your high school performance, financial need, or whether you come from a particular background or community.
ASU’s New American University Scholarship Awards are for outstanding incoming freshmen. There are 4 different awards within the program: the President’s Award, the Provost’s Award, the Dean’s Award and the University Award.
The amount you are eligible to receive depends on your residency status and the value you are offering. But generally speaking, it is a comprehensive scholarship program that includes a large portion of ASU’s freshman population.

The Harrison Westerfield Scholarship is another honor for incoming ASU freshmen. However, this scholarship is designed specifically for out-of-state students – and to be considered, you must be able to demonstrate a commitment to community service.
To be eligible for the Harrison Westerfield Scholarship, you need at least a 3.0 grade point average (GPA). The total prize is $1,000.
The ASU Next Generation Service Corps (NGSC) is a 4-year leadership development program that trains Arizona State students from all majors to address meaningful societal challenges.

While gift aid such as grants and scholarships are always ideal because you don’t have to pay them back, the majority of students simply cannot afford to go to school without taking out loans.
A student loan is a nominal amount of money that you borrow to help pay your tuition fees. Loans give you money to pay for college now — but in exchange for that money, you pay that money back with interest.

Each loan has its own interest rate and repayment terms depending on the type of loan and your eligibility requirements.
If you are applying for a federal student loan, you must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is a universal application form used by the US Department of Education’s Federal Student Aid Office to determine your eligibility for federal loans and grants.
Arizona State also accepts private loans (which are usually credit-based) from other lenders. If you go for a personal loan, just be aware that the application process is far from universal. Each lender will have their own application process, so just make sure you understand how to apply and all the eligibility requirements.

Many of the financial aid opportunities offered to ASU students require you to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
The federal government uses the FAFSA to determine how much U.S. government aid you are eligible to receive. However, your state government and ASU will also look at the information included on your FAFSA to determine if you can secure any state financial aid or institutional aid.
That being said, it’s important to note that many of ASU’s scholarships require you to fill out a separate application form. This is especially true for current ASU students who are applying for scholarships.
For more information about applying for the FAFSA — including important dates and how to make sure your application is submitted successfully — visit our Learning Center.

The state of Arizona offers a fairly comprehensive set of eligibility requirements for its in-state students. That being said, you must meet some basic criteria to qualify for financial aid.
To receive federal financial aid in the state of Arizona, you must have a high school diploma or its equivalent. You must also be accepted into a college program and be enrolled in that program.
To be eligible for student aid, you must be enrolled at least half-time, and you must be working towards a degree or joint degree. If you are only enrolled in a certificate program, you may not be eligible for federal student aid. This includes loans.
First, you must be able to demonstrate financial need. You will be able to do this through the information you include in your FAFSA application. That said, it’s worth noting that many loans and scholarships are available to students without demonstrating financial need.
Scholarships (phase I)
You must be either a US citizen, a US citizen, or a qualified non-US citizen with a valid Social Security Number (SSN).
Finally, you must maintain satisfactory academic progress to earn your college degree—and you must attend all classes in which you are enrolled. If you fail to attend any of your classes, your aid will be reduced as part of a support adjustment.
It’s worth noting that not every financial opportunity at ASU requires a FAFSA. However, if you are being considered for campus-based funds, institutional grants, federal Pell Grants, and Direct Loans, a FAFSA is required.
You must submit a valid FAFSA and any supporting documents before the last day of attendance (LDA).
