If you are applying for a federal student loan, you must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is a universal application form used by the US Department of Education’s Office of Federal Student Aid to determine your eligibility for federal loans and grants.
The state of Arizona also accepts private loans (which are often credit-based) from other lenders. Each lender will have their own application process, so just make sure you understand how to apply and all the eligibility requirements.

Many of the financial aid opportunities offered to ASU students require you to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
The federal government uses the FAFSA to determine how much U.S. government aid you qualify for. But your state government and ASU will also look at the information you include on your FAFSA to determine if you qualify for any state financial aid or institutional aid.
That being said, it is important to note that many ASU scholarships require separate application forms to be completed. This is especially true for current ASU students who are applying for scholarships.
For more information about applying for the FAFSA, including important dates and how to make sure your application is successfully submitted, visit our Learning Center.
